Summer Bugs Sugar Cookies

June 14, 2011 in cookies - 4 Comments - 2 min read

Today was the last day of the school year.  When I came home from work yesterday, (I work part-time–a full day every other day because we have a block schedule), my husband started singing, “School’s Out for the Summer.”  Haha…teachers get excited at the end of the year too.  One end-of-the-year staff tradition that our high school does is a potluck lunch on the last day of school.  Everyone brings a different item, and the past four years,  I have always brought in a dessert.

Today, I brought in sugar cookies.  I’ve thought about these for a while now, but procrastinated on making them until Sunday night.  Sunday night at 7.  (At least I made the frosting the day before.)  So I was up until after midnight decorating these, (and adding some finishing touches last night), which made for a hard Monday, but they were worth it.

I made lemon sugar cookies (because lemon’s my favorite) with lemon royal icing.  I also used Disco Dust for the first time.  Boy, is that addicting!  I could have easily Disco Dusted all the cookies, but tried to restrain myself to just the dragonflies.

So, here is the bunch, having their close-ups.

I had a beehive to go with the bee, but it was just too big, and honestly, I didn’t feel like flooding it all.

Disco Dust is amazing.  It just takes a little while to do, as I piped and flooded the rest of the body one day and left the blue wings until the next day.  (Unless I wanted the dust to stick to the whole body.)

And a flower for the bugs to land on, or eat.

And the bee flying to the flower.  Okay, I’m done being cheesy.

A close-up of the butterfly wings, because those took a while to make.

I boxed the cookies up, ready to take to school.  When I ordered packaging boxes some time ago, I didn’t remember ordering blue; I thought I ordered chocolate brown.  Anyway, they’re a Tiffany blue color, which doesn’t fully match my logo, but fine, or “whatev..” as my students would say.

Enjoy, and welcome to summer.  xoxo
